  1. What are the requirements to be a member of the Society?
    Answer: Any person who is a descendant of Richard Lee and his wife, Anne Constable, who came to Virginia prior to 1640, is eligible to membership in the Society of the Lees of Virginia, provided he or she can establish his or her claim of descent from Richard Lee to the satisfaction of the Board of Directors.

  2. How can I apply for membership?
    Answer: Applicants should request hard copies of the application forms from the Society Membership Secretary, 8434 Meadows Road, Warrenton, VA 20186-7426

  3. What documents do I need to prove that I am related to Richard Lee?
    Answer: As a general rule, it is sufficient to provide documentation that satisfactorily connects the applicant to the most current citation in LEE OF VIRGINIA by Edmund Jennings Lee. For specific documents that may be used to prove this connection, see the acceptable proof of ancestry page.

  4. What benefits do I get from being a Society member?
    Answer: There are no tangible benefits deriving from membership in the Society.

  5. How much does it cost to be a member?
    Answer: The fee for life membership in the Society is a one time payment of $400.00

  6. I think that my family is related to Robert E. Lee... How can the Society help research this family legend?
    Answer: The Society does not offer genealogical research services. The best way to prove a relationship to General R. E. Lee, is through one’s own research or through a professional genealogist.

  7. I understand that the Society offers education loans. Am I eligible and how can I apply?
    Answer: Potential applicants should submit a letter to the fund's Chairperson outlining their reason for applying, a brief statement of their current finances and how much they are seeking. Please look on our contact us pageunder "Education Fund" for more information on how to apply.

  8. How can I order copies of Lee Chronicles and Shaping a Nation: The Story of the Lees?
    Answer: Lee Chronicles can be ordered through the Stratford hall Book Store at: <http://www.stratfordhall.org/Merchant2/merchant.mv

    To order Shaping a Nation: Stories of the Lees, please send a check for $18.45 (Made out to the Lee Society) to Letitia M. Grant, P.O. Box 36, Ware Neck, VA 23178. Be sure to include your name and address. The book is $14.95 and $3.50 is shipping and handling.
